    Doug Harling worked with granulation as a graduate student at the University of Southern Illinois at Carbondale. His initial research was emphasizing the use of granulation as a means of drawing, using only the metal. He became absorbed with first mastering the technique, and then applying it as a graphic tool, a kind of "pointillism" in gold.
