Apply a strip of hot glue at top and bottom of the front (scored) side, and center the cardboard face down on the wrong side of the velvet.

I cut out a piece of velour cloth just bigger than the cardboard. Glued the cardboard down, trimmed around cardboard, then glued the edges of the cloth to the back of the display. I had to tape the edges down, too, because the glue wouldn't hold them completely.
