    Ingeborg Bratman moved from textile design to jewellery and studied at Hornsey in 1965-8 before titanium was in use there. Her experiments with tantalum began in the mid 1970s when she was encouraged to look for unusual metals by Sarah Hosking who organised a series of themed travelling exhibitions, one of which was ‘metals’.

    Ingeborg Bratman began using it in the 1970s when she produced tantalum jewellery for a touring exhibition organised by Sarah Hosking of East Midlands Arts. Looking for an unusual metal to work with, Bratman collaborated with the industrial firm of Plessey who offered her advice on using tantalum and scrap from their processing plant.

    In a parallel development Ingeborg Bratman, via contacts in UK industry, also started working with tantalum. Tantalum has a specific gravity of 16.6, close to that of gold (19.3) and a very attractive blue/grey colour. A bangle and earrings made of tantalum are on display in the Science Museum.
