It works well on rusty steel and oxidised aluminium. I don't know about other metals. Mix at about 10 or 15 parts water to 1 part molasses. Soak the rusted material for as long as it takes to turn all the rust or whatever into grey sludge (could be a week or more for heavily rusted metal), and then rinse/scrub it off with clean water.

I use very fine gauge steel wool and rub very gently. It works well on bigger pieces such as pendants or old jewelry findings with minor rust. I have not used steel wool on delicate pieces such as an antique faceted steel piece. I sell vintage jewelry in my other shop.
