CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE. The Sri Lanka Gem and Jewellery Association (SLGJA) was inaugurated in 2003 with the amalgamation of the Sri Lanka Jewellers and Gem Merchants’ Federation (formed in 1970), the Sri Lanka Gem Traders’ Association (formed in 1975), the Sri Lanka Jewellery Manufacturing Exporters Association and the Lapidary Association.
Diamonds, Gems & Jewellery Sri Lanka is among the five most important gem-bearing nations of the world. High availability of precious and semi-precious stones and the expertise of the exporters are a boon to the global market.
The value chain of the modern day gem and jewellery industry in Sri Lanka is depicted in the following diagram. About 90% of the gem mining is carried out in alluvial deposits using traditional methods, in open cast shallow pits or deeper shaft type pits and tunnels or by manually dredging the river beds.
Gem and Jewellery Research and Training Institute (GJRTI) has been established in July 1995, under Section 25 (1) of the National Gem and Jewellery Authority Act. GJRTI is actively engaged in the business of providing Research and training services for the promotion and sustainable development of the Gem and Jewellery Industry.
Held annually in Colombo since 1991 with state and private sector patronage, FACETS Sri Lanka 2020, the 30th International Gem & Jewellery Show will have hundreds of local and foreign exhibitors showcasing their gem and jewellery products and a large number of influential trade visitors from around the world, which promises a "Bigger & Better" FACETS Sri Lanka 2020 than ever before.
